Where to go for the best candy in Mexico City

Celaya is a city in the state of Guanajuato which is known for it’s sweets, particularly the cajeta – similar to dulce de leche, but made from goat’s milk instead of cow’s in a copper pot with a wooden spoon – which makes it a fitting name for this sweet shop with locations in the historic center of Mexico City and Colonia Roma.

Dulcería de Celaya was founded in 1874 by the Guizar family, who brought sweets from all over Mexico to be sold in their original shop on Plateros street (today called Madero). As demand for their products grew, the family bought the recipes from some of their biggest suppliers and began to manufacture the candies themselves in the basement of their shop.

If you can’t make it to Celaya to get some of their famous cajeta while you’re visiting Mexico, you will be able to find a jar at Dulcería de Celaya, along with typical Mexican sweets like suspiros (a type of sweet merengue with a chewy center), cocadas (coconut candies with milk), or some of my personal favorites – jamoncillo (made from dulce de leche, contrary to what you might imagine from the name) and quesitos de almendra (made from almonds, egg and milk, but no cheese), which make a lovely dessert after lunch if you just want a bite of something sweet with your coffee.
